Advisory: Change to Case RulesCompetition

To all our participants and advisors, we would like to point your attention to the following rules which have been altered for the 8th Annual McGill Management International Case Competition:

  • After 22 hours (or 2 hours before presentation time), each team must change into business formal, then move to the Desautels Faculty of Management in the Checkpoint Room with their 2 laptops, their USB key, and a printed copy of their slides.
  • Teams are responsible to manage their time and ensure that they have a printed copy of their slides ready 2 hours before their presentation.
  • The final document must comply to the following layout: 6 slides per page, black and white, single-sided.
  • The slides can include a cover page or additional materials for the judges, such as formatted Excel spreadsheets.
  • The committee will make double-sided photocopies of the slides for the judges as soon as a team arrives in the Checkpoint room. Re-prints will not be permitted.
  • Once the laptops are returned and the slides have been photocopied, each team will be allowed to rehearse their presentation in an assigned classroom for 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Each team is responsible to keep the photocopies of their slides and hand them out to the judging panel at the start of each presentation.

The complete rules are available on this page.

MMICC ready to welcome the worldCompetition

A team of student organizers from the Desautels Faculty of Management are in the final stages of preparation to host the 8th Annual McGill Management International Case Competition from March 25th to 29th.

Delegations from 12 universities and 10 countries will converge to Montreal to take part in North America’s leading case competition. Among the schools represented this year are last year’s top 3 winners: National University of Singapore, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Washington.

Teams will have 24 hours to solve and present a business case in front of a panel of judges and the general public, in the hopes of making it into the competition’s prestigious top 3 ranking.

But organizers are also emphasizing the social aspect of MMICC. With 3 days of social activities leading to the case, every team is assured to go home with unforgettable memories, while having met friends from across the world during activities such as a day of snow tubing, a scavenger hunt in downtown Montreal, a networking cocktail hosted by HSBC Bank Canada, and a spectacular Opening Ceremonies soirée at the historical Pointe-a-Callière Museum.

Visitors are welcome to attend the final presentations on Saturday March 29, which are free of admission and which run at 40-minute intervals from 9am to 6pm.

The winners will later be announced at a Closing Ceremonies gala in Old Montreal.

MMICC is the most international and largest scale student-run event to take place at the Faculty, with the attendance of 60 delegates, 25 organizers and 14 judges. The week-long events are spread across 10 unique venues in Montreal.

The competition is title-sponsored by HSBC Bank Canada. Freedom 55 Financial and Deloitte & Touche are also among the 20 sponsors who have chosen to support the event.

MMICC Announces Important Changes to Case FormatCompetition

After careful consideration, and in an effort to renew the calibre of the McGill Management International Case Competition, the Executive Committee 2008 is announcing three change components to the case format, to be effective this upcoming 8th edition.

  • We are thrilled to confirm that each team competing at MMICC 2008 will now be able to represent their University without the cover of a fictitious team name. Up until 2007, teams were previously required to create a team name and were not allowed to reveal which school they represented during Day 5. Instead, competitors will deliver their presentation using their school name, and there will no longer be restrictions such as the use of a school logo in presentation slides. The visitors and judges will be able to identify which school they are watching.

  • The presentation format will also be slightly altered. Our past competitions allowed each team to present within 20 minutes, followed by a 5 minutes of Questions & Answers. Our revised format will now provide teams with an additional 5 minutes of Q&A at the end of each presentation (for a total of 10). We believe this will allow the panel of judges to pose a greater number of questions to our participants, and for them to respond more effectively.

  • Moreover, we will not be offering our customary "Feedback Session" with one specific judge at the end of Day 5. Instead, we will provide each team with the judges' evaluation sheets, which are filled out throughout the day, and which will be mailed to the school advisors after the competition. We believe that spending time with only one judge was possibly limiting in perspective, and we hope this change will allow all teams to receive valuable feedback and comments from the entire judging panel.

MMICC 2008 will take place next March, with participants expected to arrive on Tuesday March 25. The final presentations will be hosted by the Desautels Faculty of Management on Saturday March 29, from 9am to 6pm. MMICC is a student-run case competition and will enter its 8th edition.
